Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care
Raising Literacy Australia welcomes Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care
Raising Literacy Australia welcomes today’s announcement from Premier Peter Malinauskas on a Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care in South Australia.
Raising Literacy Australia hopes to play a significant role in the Royal Commission, in line with our organisation’s critical work and existing programs, which support early childhood literacy right across Australia.
Our organisation’s very clear call to action to Australian families is to Read, Sing, Talk, and Play every day with your child from birth.
Raising Literacy Australia CEO, Elizabeth Davis states:
“This review provides a fantastic opportunity to explore how we can better support families in their role as children’s first teachers. The importance of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life is critical. These early interactions have lifelong impact.
“There is much we can do to equip families with literacy tools and resources that support children’s developmental milestones and build on what parents and carers are already doing at home.
“The most important tool for any child is a loving and engaged parent or caregiver. Children thrive on their parent or carer’s time, attention and imagination.”
Kate Ellis, who leads the Early Years Taskforce in South Australia with Raising Literacy Australia, fully supports early childhood reform and states:
“We cannot sit back and allow South Australian children to fall further behind those in the rest of the country before they have even started school. I’ve always believed that supporting children and their families during the early formative years is one of the smartest investments that any community can make.”
“We look forward to the Royal Commission’s findings, including the delivery of quality preschool aged programs for three olds in South Australia.”
Raising Literacy Australia CEO Elizabeth Davis and Kate Ellis, Chair of the Early Years Taskforce, are available for media comment.
