Inclusive Literacy Practice in Libraries

This workshop is designed for children’s librarians and program officers to explore meaningful ways to connect with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse children and families in library settings. Discover practical strategies to promote a strong sense of belonging, nurture language development in both community languages and Standard Australian English, and plan inclusive Storytime sessions that reflect and celebrate your community’s diversity.

Introduction:

Join a network of children’s librarians and program officers from across Australia to share ideas, gain inspiration, and strengthen your inclusive practice.

Participants learn how to connect with and support young children and families with limited English in an out of home setting to help build their confidence, literacy skills and a strong sense of belonging.

Content includes:

  • Understanding your community
  • Supporting language development and incorporating community languages into programs
  • Selecting and using diverse, culturally responsive children’s literature
  • Creating a sense of belonging through welcoming library spaces and inclusive Storytime practices
  • Strengthening outreach to diverse families and communities

Target Audience:

Children’s librarians and program officers working with children in the early years

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how CALD children develop Standard Australian English language.
  • Learn why scaffolding children’s home and community languages is essential for language development and inclusion.
  • Develop ways to connect with and support young children and families to build their confidence, literacy skills and a strong sense of belonging in libraries.
  • Develop ways to support engagement with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) families.
  • Build confidence and skills on choosing culturally appropriate books, using the books provided in your toolkit, and planning an inclusive storytime session.

Learning Methods:

Online via Zoom. This is a live interactive workshop.
