SA Preschool Boost Inclusive Literacy Practice for CALD Children & Families

This workshop is designed to upskill you to effectively engage with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) children and families. You will learn about recent research on supporting and scaffolding home language and will gain strategies for connecting with and supporting children and families with limited English. The session focuses on building children’s confidence, enhancing literacy skills and fostering a strong sense of belonging in an inclusive learning environment.
Introduction:
This program is delivered as a 2.5-hour online workshop, and it also includes:
- 1 Big Book for your service, as well as a toolkit containing 3 finger puppets and 3 picture books (including Little Book Press titles) to enhance your learning and implementation. These resources are seamlessly integrated into the workshop delivery, equipping you with tools to incorporate into your planning and curriculum, while also offering valuable assets to share with families after the session.

- A copy of the slide deck,
- A 12-month membership to the online learning group forum. This platform provides access to expert trainers from Raising Literacy Australia, who will share inquiry prompts, research insights, and practical strategies.

- Gain an understanding on why it is important to scaffold children’s home and community language and how it relates to children learning Standard Australian English language.
- Develop ways to support engagement with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) children and families.
- Build confidence in choosing culturally appropriate books, embedding books received in your toolkit and planning an inclusive story time session.
- Gain strategies to strengthen and facilitate outreach to diverse families and communities.
