Building Home Libraries
Building Home Libraries Program is an early years multilayered, targeted literacy program that has been proven effective in addressing disadvantage in children and families and children’s vulnerabilities in language and communication skills. It is designed to strengthen the learning capacity, oral language, and literacy development of 3- and 4-year-old children. The program enables children to access high-quality literacy resources and support parent capacities to create home literacy environments that foster (and increase) interactions and quality book sharing. Programs can be delivered for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.
Your service will also receive a set of the same books and play-based resources, creating consistency between what children experience at home and in the learning setting.
Educators participating in the program receive professional learning focused on sharing literacy messages with families, role modelling book-sharing strategies, and guiding parents and carers in using the resources to support rich home learning experiences.
All books included in the Building Home Libraries Program are published by our in-house publishing house, Little Book Press, and have been carefully selected to suit the developmental needs of each age group.
Expected outcomes for this program are:
- Increased literacy engagement from families and children
- Develop an understanding of the neuroscience behind positive interactions and early childhood brain development
- Gain strategies on engaging families with varying literacy levels and incorporating play into reading
How the program is delivered:
- The program is initially delivered via an online training session, detailing the program and advice on delivery/engagement with families. The training is downloadable so you can access it at any time.
- Book packs are sent out to centres each school term as a regular delivery for distribution.
- A pre- and post-program survey is sent out for feedback and evaluation at the start and end of the program.
- Regular check-ins with centres throughout the program are initiated by RLA staff, to offer additional support and answer questions.
- Raising Literacy Australia is available anytime throughout the year to offer additional support.
